8 Shooters Clue 15: The BIG shoot out!

Get your guns cleaned up and loaded!
Cuz here we go. Time for the BIG shoot out!

Using your COORDINATING C and D MATCHING PRINTS
lets do some fussy cutting!
I am so in love with these.
Who ever thought a western shootout could end up so cool??
(Ok so maybe the guys always think westerns are cool...)

For the following, ALWAYS make sure that the lighter of your two colors is on the left, and that the darker of your two colors is on the right. ALWAYS.
This is very very important to the over all design.

First you will fussy cut four LARGE diamonds from each print ( Use the exact same fussy cut from
Both fabrics to make the mirrored image ) , and sew them together as double shots.

Now you are going to use the same fabric and fussy cut 16 LARGE diamonds of each , both the light and the dark , then make 8 half shots ( four diamond each ) as below .
Remember to us the lighter color on the far left.
Aren't these wonderful ?!

Now let's make some more 8 Shooters!
Again using both colors,
Make a total of four out of the LARGE diamonds.
I couldn't decide which fussy cut version that I liked the best so I made two of each . Why not ?!

So this week you will be fussy cutting , basting and stitching up some large diamonds.
You will be making 4 double shots , 16 half ( 4) shots and four 8 shooters.
You can certainly make all of these out of one single color as opposed to two but I think the two colors will look much more interesting. And fussy cutting is not necessary if you don't want to .

I'll see you in tenish days. Not Wednesday but the one after as I think it will take some ten days to get all of these finished .
I don't know the date as I'm sitting here in the dark at midnight writing this post . I'm so angry that I didn't get it done before midnight but you see, the power is out. And I was trying to hook up a hot spot and that wasn't going either .
I gave up and decided to finish this blog post mobile from my phone . Thank goodness I had started it early this morning before I went to work because for some reason blogger does not work good mobile and I can never get photos to work right .
If it worked mobile then you all would get a lot more blog posts than you do now . Drives me batty that I can't blog well from my phone .
Anyway ... have a blast shooting this week .
I'm gonna sit and listen to the thunder and my husband's snores while I wait on power to be restored. I mean seriously I cannot be expected to sleep well without a fan. Can't happen.

8 Shooters: Inventory Intermission (Photo Rich!)

Hats off to you if you have made it this far in our mystery!
I am super excited to keep going because I am ready to begin fussy cutting again. If you know me well, then you know I LIVE to fussy cut. Totally my passion.
So I decided to stop on these background pieces for awhile and pick up my awful perty blue coordinating prints.
But as I was sewing along, I realized...
we cannot piece these until THE VERY END.
Oh so sad! But exciting too because we will finish with a BANG for sure!

Only I am getting ahead of myself in excitement.
As I was sewing along, I noticed I have to keep referring back to my pattern just to make sure I am not more lost and confused than what is normal for me.
And then I realized you all do not have a pattern to follow and you are blindly following me so it would really not do well for you all to get lost and confused either!

So I decided it might be best to take a tiny (and I mean very tiny) Intermission.
I would like you to spend the next couple of days just taking a little inventory of what we have so far.
That way we can make sure we are all on the same lost and confused path to being the star of our 8 shooter show.

If you go way back in the beginning you will remember we started with making 8 shooter stars along with some coordinating stars.
As we went along we added some background pieces along the way, which brings you to the following:

Of Shooter set ONE you should have ONE 8 shooter that has been pieced with some background pieces:

And 4 coordinating 6 shot stars also with background pieces attached.

Of our SHOOTER SET TWO you should have four 8 shooters all with background attached.

And 16 double shot arrows.

Our Shooter Set THREE should have four 8 shooters with backgrounds attached.

And 32 single shots just waiting on us to show them some love.

At this point, we have used a lot of background but we still have the following already basted but not yet stitched to our quilt yet.

Of our SOLID MAIN BACKGROUND
you should have 36 Jumbo triangles basted and waiting.

Oops forgot our little sqaure pyramid. These are made of both solid matching background set one squares. You should have 16 of these.

Then of your SOLID MATCHING BACKGROUND SET ONE:
Of the lighter color you should have 64 small triangles basted.

and of the darker color you should have
4 medium basted triangles and
32 small basted triangles.

Next we moved to our coordinating A2, B2 and C2 tonals.
From the A2 and B2 we made sixteen of these 4 Shooters.

And from the coordinating C2 we made 32 little houses.

Finally lets take a look at what we haven't used yet.
Of course we have the coordinating A and B matching prints (mine are blue) that I showed at the top of this post.
We also have SOLID MATCHING BACKGROUND SET TWO.
A darker and lighter of each.

And finally our COORDINATING C AND D MATCHING PRINTS.

There, are you all fixed up and on the straight path or more cornfused than you was before you read this post?

I'll see you Saturday. Let's do some fussy cutting.
I'm all for it.
IF YOU ARE NEW TO JOINING US,
there is a button up top that says "8 Shooters" and it will take you step by step through the mystery.
Also there is a Facebook group where we like to share our progress.
Come join the fun!!

8 Shooters Clue 14: Colorful Half Shooters

How is your shooting coming along?
Are you getting all caught up?
I haven't sewn in weeks, yet I was able to catch all up in the last couple, so those of you just joining, NO WORRIES!
Just go to the beginning (see that little button up top that says "8 Shooters"... it'll take you thru ALL the clues, and get to shootin'!

Last time we met we basted all of our Tonals.
Today we are going to work with our A2 and B2 Tonal diamonds:

You should have a pile of these diamondback rattlers:

I'm not a fan of rattlers so lets turn them into Half Shooters... you know, half shooters have FOUR pieces and look like this:

You will be making 16 all together.

You will have TWO weeks to make them, but actually we will be back in a week with a mystery post.
I want to do a little inventory post for you, showing all the steps thus far in ONE post so that you can check mark all off and see how you are doing.

So next week we will do that, then the week after...
Yippee Skippy we are GONNA FUSSY CUT again!

I so love fussy cutting.

This is a twisty turny mystery with more excitement on the way.
Stay tuned and keep shootin'!

8 Shooters Clue 13: The Climax!

I have SO SO SO much to tell you, but tonight first and foremost is the mystery! Since we have been moving along a bit slowly I decided that tonight I would provide a bit of excitement. Because every western has a climax before it heads off into another direction so lets have us a climax tonight!

p.s. Shouting out to Jill... when you read my other blogs that I will get around to writing in a day or two you will know why I haven't emailed you back yet but I'll get to it very very soon and thanks for joining!

Ok SO The CLIMAX episode in our mystery is like one of those extra long episodes, like a two hour special or something. I am going to give you several clues, and using those clues you will probably be able to figure out a few blocks of your quilt... but not all because, you know, there is still mystery left to go. So let's take the climax in THREE parts tonight.

PART ONE: Squares.
Take one dark background square and sew it to two light background squares so that it makes a little pyramid type thing. Like this:

You need to make 16 sets of those square pyramid things shown above ^^.

CLIMAX PART TWO: Small Diamonds
Remember back when we stitched up your small diamonds, that we had several of them leftover?
 (64 to be exact).

We are going to use your A2 and B2 Tonals and baste up all the rest of the small diamonds.
You will need to baste 32 of each color.
THEN if you get bored, you can even sew one of each pair together. (I don't have mine stitched together yet, but this is just freebie busy work I am tossing out at you. )

CLIMAX PART THREE: Little Houses
We are going to use C2 Tonal to baste our little houses. You have 32 houses to baste.

I've given you a TON of work to do this time.
That is because we are coming up on July 4th here in the states which means yet another busy time at work for me.
( I am telling you, Americans seriously do eat way too much... do you realize how many hot dogs and brats I've already sold this summer??!! blech. )
So I thought it best to give you some busy work while I am busy at work.
I tend to like to meet with you all on Wednesdays, but two weeks from now is July 5th.
That would be why I gave you enough work for three weeks... July 12th is three weeks out.
I think you should have enough time to stitch up the background pyramid type things, plus baste up all of your A2, B2 and C2 pieces... and if you get really bored you can stitch up pairs of your A2/B2 pieces.
I am super excited to see this progress. In the facebook group someone shared their progress and it was so beautiful, please if you don't want to share on facebook but you tend to share on a blog, comment and let me know! I LOVE to see the progression of these mysteries!

Until we meet again, Happy shooting!

8 Shooters Clue 12: Squarin off again

Ok so I promised this post by Wednesday, and by my time I still have 45 minutes to go so we are all good! Whew.
I cannot wait to tell you about some things that have happened, GOOD things. But no time at the moment cuz we need to square off some more!

Take out your 8 Shooters SET TWO. It is the one that has the first background squares going around it. Now add some colorful squares out of the lighter back ground color. Mine isn't sewn (you all are used to me by now), but here is what it looks like. You have 4 SET TWO 8 shooters so make sure you do this for all 4 of them.

One day while I was at work Stephen had like 4 kids in the house. (Jerry wasn't sure exactly how many... that's scary.) I guess one of them made their way to my sewing area. Stephen and I share an "activity room" that has all of our stuff: computer/school/clothes/toys/fabric/sewing tables and machines. So I understand kids coming to get toys but after what I found a couple of days ago when I went to sew for this post, the neighbor children are no longer allowed to play in our activity room.
One of them had taken my entire mystery and unbasted it. I didn't have them all glue basted all the way, but I had them all tacked down. I do that in the very beginning when decided fabric requirements. I glue tack the pieces to the fabric and cut them out, then finish basting later.

Only now I got to sort papers and fabric all apart and tack them all down again.
This would be why I didn't sew this week.

I sure hope you got to sew this week.
I asked people to post in the mystery group their progress so far and only two posted so those two one a prize. (Yes both of you...FB message me your address and I'll send them out first of next week. )

You really should become more involved there.
Because I am going to start just giving away lots of stuff.
I have lots of stuff to give.

Ok, I better quit jabbering and post before I run out of time before midnight!
See you Monday with the next post.

8 Shooters Clue 11: It's beginning to come together

I know that we still have much to baste, but if you are good at putting two and two together, from here out you will begin to see things come together a bit.
You'll soon have some "Oh that's the block we are making" moments.

For our lighter background colors, let's begin, as usual with our SET ONE.
Get out your partial shooting stars, the 6 point ones. They already have the darker background square sewn to them.
YOU HAVE FOUR OF THESE.

Now let's stitch lighter background triangles to them.
In the photo, my purples look almost the same color, but the triangles are actually lighter than the square.

Sew the little triangles to all four sets of your 6 pointed shooters.
Let's see, today is Thursday, so let's plan on meeting back here on Wednesday.
You should have plenty of time to get these sewn on by then, and those that started late or had to catch up, I am hoping my little life hiccup has helped you catch up a bit!

Why things are how they is: in other words, where I've been a hidin'.

That's hillbilly talk. I've not talked Hillbilly in a very long time. You see I lost Ms Hillbilly. I told you that and I just cannot decide whether to find her again or not. Lemme explain. I know I've explained alot but new developments have happened. There are always new developments. If anyone knows how to do crazy life, we do at our home. Let's do a quick person by person so you understand.

STEPHEN
is a happy 7 yr old boy. But a couple of months ago something happened that prompted us to change our world forever. Things can happen, even in little tiny towns of 400 people. Things can happen right out in the open, in the backyard with parents not far away. An older boy, age 12, decided one day that he would have some fun making things happen. And he decided to target my 7 yr old son and a 5 yr old girl. Only he thought it would be more fun to force that little boy and girl to do things that no child of that age should have a clue about. I was at work when it happened and had to rush home. You cannot run from all your problems but given our situation, we just felt that our son had to get out of there. So in just a couple of weeks time, we moved 80 miles south to be in the same town my daughter lives in.

And that is why I disappeared so fast. I may have told you some of this before, but there is the reason all right out in the open. Well, part of the reason. The other is financial. Medical issues put people in the poor house. It's happened to many. It has happened to us. *shrug shoulders*, I don't even care anymore. Just as long as we have a bed to sleep in at night, and food for the boy I am happy. We have those and then some so all is good.

JERRY
is an exhausted, sick man. He has the following:
Chrons Disease
Diabetes
Liver Disease (medical induced).
Colon cancer survivor
Stroke (x 10 ) survivor
and the newest as of this week: Kidney disease.

I am pretty sure all of that explains it all. If you want to research the ins of outs of each disease and see what they cause on the body, by all means, you should! But, he's a walking miracle time bomb and each day he's exhausted. Literally every minute I am not at work I have to be with our son so that my husband can rest for when I am at work. He's declining in health bit by bit and this is emotionally, physically, mentally exhausting on all of us.

Ms HILLBILLY
That's me, sort of. When we moved we had to downsize BIG TIME. So its been really hard to get that done. In the midst of trying to move I had my mystery all figured out then when I was at work my daughter was kind enough to pack and move and entire load, and buried my entire sewing area, mystery and all under boxes!!
You see we had to downsize so fast and so much that we don't even have room to walk in our home. We are giving things away on Swap shop right and left and trying to make space to live.
TODAY I UNEARTHED my mystery. FINALLY.
I was so happy. I am so so so so so so sorry that I've been an awful host again. I don't mean to be. Would you please tell my crazy life to calm down so that I can have some sewing time? Pretty please?

I have been so undecided what to do about the future of Hillbilly Quilt Shop. And I still don't know. I think I want to close it down for good since I cannot keep it up like I'd like. But then I think I'd like to just step back and produce patterns on occasion. Because I have a multitude waiting for that.

Then I think I should pull my website and go just with Craftsy. But then I wonder if I should even bother, and maybe go away for good. Then I look at these patterns and think, "no I do not want to do that. "

So I don't know.

Here is what I do know. My husband is declining. During this time, I won't host another mystery. As much as I love them, I do give up on them for awhile. Just a little while. And I'll start producing patterns as I can. And I'll just wait. Wait on the answer. If you have answers for me I am all ears.

Now I need to get onto the mystery post that you've been waiting for.

A book review for all ages

When I took my business back to the bare basics, I had decided that I was going to start all over again in every way, which includes this blog.
On my old blog, I used to talk about EVERYTHING. From hillbilly sillies, to stories about my family, to quilt tutorials, I just blogged it all. And I LOVED it. But when Jerry first got sick five years ago (has it been that long??!!) I disappeared.

I mean it. I lost ME.

So, I determined that when I basically took my little shop down to the very basics, JUST pdf designs, then it was time to start everything over again, including this blog.
Because I LOVE writing and it's a great outlet for me, and maybe even it will be a good read for you.

Reading and writing go hand in hand. So, I also vowed to pick up a book. And read it. I have SO MANY books. My husband and I were both avid readers at one time...before he got sick. We enhaled books. He can barely read anymore, and I never read because I was lost.
So I picked up a book.
I started with a kid's book.
One should NEVER mind reading a kid's book. Plus I need to decide at what age to read each book to Stephen. So I am slowly reading through our library, and am marking each book at what age to read them to my son.

Just today I finished a classic by E. B. White.
Now if you don't recognize that author, he wrote Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little.
And this book which I had never read before:

At first I really enjoyed the story. I love outdoor stories and animal stories. I'd never read much about Trumpeter Swans and I looked forward to learning about these beautiful birds.

Just as in the other books mentioned above, the story line allowed for the animals to take on human traits and that is when I thought I might not enjoy it.
Not that animals taking on human traits is a problem. I am just a realist. My favorite genre is biography or historical fiction.
I like it to be true or sound true.
But the more I read, the more I grew to love this swan.
And there is something to be said for older books. The character lessons are so good. This little swan rose above.
In fact, as I sit here and type, I am realizing just how much I can learn from this swan and his trumpet.

Grab you a cookie, or a bon bon, or even a carrot stick. Sit down and read this treasure. It will only take you a day or two.
And I am not affiliated with anyone but me and my little family.
And my little family is so happy that I am finding my way to ME again.

Now what shall I read next?
Lemme go pick something...
Because we all know that I should be sewing but at the end of a long day, its so much better for me to just read a book.

8 Shooters: Clue ten, baste it all again!

In the last few weeks we have been working on our pretty background colors.
(Labeled as SOLID MATCHING BACKGROUND SET TWO).
Below are the colors I chose.

We started with the darker one.
We still have some pieces not sewn up, but place them aside for now.

This week we are going to baste squares and triangles again.
ALL of your remaining squares and small triangles need to be basted to the lighter of the
SOLID MATCHING BACKGROUND SET TWO color.

A quick count that I HOPE is accurate is there should be 80 small triangles and
48 squares, My pieces are at the other house at the moment so please tell me you have 80 small triangles and 48 squares left. (Because if you will remember right my pattern got lost in the move and has yet to be found. I sound like a disorganized mess but its only because my kids packed/moved my desk!)

I am going to see you in ten days this time. I have all mine basted but I feel like last week had a lot of sewing plus this is a lot of basting for those that hand baste.
If you are caught up then please share in the facebook group so that we can see, or even if you have just begun please share!

8 Shooters Clue 9: Indian Time!

For this mystery we are playing Cowboys. And no game of cowboy would be complete without playing a game of Cowboys and Indians.
It kind of makes me sad that in the political correctness of our society, our littles hardly play Cowboys and Indians anymore. Because, after all they are "Native Americans". Yes. Yes they are. But I am Cherokee. 1/4 Cherokee. Not a lot but enough to have enough Indian heritage to not be ashamed to be called an Indian. Sorry... I chased a rabbit there.
We are playing Cowboys and Indians this week my mystery friends.

Last Clue we were sewing our dark background pieces to Shooters Set One.
This week we are going to sew to Shooters Set TWO.

We are not going to touch our four shooters from SET TWO this week. Instead we are going to pick up our Double Shots (also from SET TWO)  and turn them into arrows.

Ok so they look like rocket ships.
That was the last mystery.
We are sharp shooters this time folks. So this is an arrow.
Cuz we are playing Cowboys and Indians this week.

I'll see you in a week. And this time its for real because I am already done with my portion.

I am so sorry this post took so long. I blogged why.
You can read all about it here.
No matter how sick my husband gets, I am now trying to rebuild my business just as a pattern business. The dream still is to cut down my work hours some and travel to guilds and shops teaching or doing mini mystery classes.
So please trust me that I will be around more since I've now up and moved my family and we are making a fresh start. A better start.
Of course we tried that a year and a half ago, and here we go again.
Hoping this is our last new start for a long time.

A quick move

Before I post the next mystery clue, I want to blog about why it has taken so long and where Ive been.

A few weeks ago a bad, unmentionable thing happened to Stephen. I won't go into details but never, ever do I miss work. This happened while I was at work. I rushed home and took off the next 5 days. During this time my husband and I decided we just had to move. This was strike two in this category of bad, and it was much worse than last time. We were not going to wait on a strike three.

So I began feverishly looking for a place that we could afford. But found nothing. So we decided to go forward and see if we could get a home loan. There are so many ins and outs of his disability battle and one big financial decision is still in court. So we were unable to get a loan until that court decision is made.

Right after we found that out, I woke up one morning and told my husband that I am hitting the road and finding somewhere. Something. I drove south. Further south than we cared to go but for months I've felt the urge to 'move south of the metro/ south of the river'. I work north of the river. But I looked south. I ended up in Independence. I grew up there. When I left I swore I would never, ever move back. But I found a subdivision. Sadly, thank to my husbands health, we have to become part of the low income population. I'm ok with that. I just wanted a decent neighborhood. This duplex subdivision seemed fairly quiet. Some places looked run down but some looked well kept.

I called on one place. Nope, she said no way on a dog. Well, our dog is family so no thanks to her too.

I called on another one. They wouldn't answer. I've tried with them before. The agent lived in Colorado. No thanks.

Then I found another. A scribbled sign in the yard with a number. And we got the place. Our new landlord is the best I've ever had. (well I liked the ones in Southern Mo too). The place is clean and well kept. So within weeks after the 'thing' happened to our boy, we were gone. I moved fast. I just wanted him out of there. And me out of there.

Stephen was heartbroken at first. But one day when he was quite upset, I reached out my pinkie and I pinkie promised him that all would be fine. We are building a new life. And he's been trying to trust me about that.

Well, all has been fine. In just two weeks Stephen has gotten involved in community events and made friends.

The move isn't easy. I am not even close to being done. I still have half the home to pack up. I keep going and buying cookware since I've not moved the kitchen yet. I can only move on days off. And my husband is too sick to help much. He's gotten worse. And worse. He fell today when trying to get dressed. So I have 15 days. And in those days I have to spend some of my days off getting him to KU for tests. But I'll get it done eventually.

The reason I am telling all this to you: This is why the mystery clue is late. When the unmentionable happened to Stephen I, right then and there, removed many of you from my personal facebook profile. If I don't know you, then I am sorry but I won't 'friend' you. Because I have a young son, a sick husband, and I don't need people I don't know looking at what we are doing. So, sorry if I unfriended you. I just friend people I know. That I REALLY know. Because my family is precious to me and must be guarded. So, you all didn't know what was going on, and were kept in the dark. I am sorry. When all went down I just worked as fast as I could to make things right for us.

Now, lets get to the mystery, shall we?
Its coming in the next post in a few minutes.

8 Shooters Clue 8: 888

Today I bring you the 8th Clue
in your 8 Shooters Mystery.
You need 8 squares of the background color that you just basted.

I LOVE this clue.
Because we are starting to finally combining colors and making some pop.
Today we are just going to work with your Shooters Set One.
This set only has one 8 Shooter.
Give it four squares.
Pretty!
(Take a moment and remove your diamond papers as well. JUST the diamond papers.)

Then sew a square to the tip of each of your other four 6 pointer partial stars that go with SET ONE.

And now you have 8 squares for your 8th clue of your 8 shooter mystery.

I have no doubt that some of you will have these all sewn up by days end. POST IN THE FACEBOOK GROUP when you are caught up. We LOVE to see the posts!

So I could say I'd give you the next clue in 3 days.
If I wasn't moving.
But I am moving and taking it a day at a time, a trip at a time around work.
Therefore, it's going to be a week.
If I get mine done sooner, I'll post it sooner.

8n't that somethin'?

8 Shooters Clue 7 : Fiddle a new Tune

I know I am a hillbilly at heart, I even devoted an entire mystery around a Shindig!
But cowboys and dancin go hand in hand.
You just can't be workin' all of the time!
So for a few more weeks we will continue dancing around before we pick up our guns and do more shooting.

Today lets switch up the tune a bit, shall we?

Remember that you were supposed to have two different sets of solid matching background. One set required 1/3 yard of each and one set required 1/2 yard of each.
Today we will be using the set that requires 1/2 Yard of each.
BE CAREFUL, choose your CORRECT set.
This would be SOLID MATCHING BACKGROUND SET TWO.
Solid matching background set one will be sit aside for quite awhile yet.
If you scroll way back to the fabric requirement post
(you can find it here), then you will see that I chose purples for my SET TWO.

We will begin with the darker of the your two solids.
Baste 40 squares
Baste 64 small triangles
Baste 4 medium triangles

That is a lot of basting and polishing before the next song plays, so we best meet back in ten(ish) days.
What is today... lets see it is Friday the 21st, so let's meet up to do another square dance on May 1st. That sounds nice.

I appreciate your patience in this mystery. The slow-and-steady-win-the-race pace is allowing those who thread baste and those with health problems be able to follow along without getting too far behind.
I know you are so eager to get back to fussy cutting and star shooting but trust me, it will be worth it to wait and you will love this finish.

Now that I know that I am keeping The Beast (my laser that I use to cut papers) I am excitedly getting ready to prepare the tree skirt kits.
And I am also going to spend an entire day off soon making kits for all previous patterns and get them back up for sale on the website.
We can do this people! Keep sharing about your friendly little Hillbilly.
I'd love to be traveling to guilds or shops by fall so keep that in mind!

Also, I will also be blogging more often...not just the mystery posts.
I am trying to revive the ol' Hillbilly from long ago. And she LOVED blogging.
See ya soon!
